Residue of Removal

CATEGORY: Experimental, Publication Design

The identity that is being observed is the ironic "residue" left from removing unwanted material, only to create another trace of their own. Pasting flyers, posters or stickers in public places such as poles and bus stations is frowned upon by the Singaporean government; hence these items are regularly discarded by public workers and cleaners of the area.

This found identity reveals Singapore's endless pursuit of cleanliness, and the lengths in which the government will go to in order to live up to its reputation in being a "clean and attractive" city. However. these traces seem to betray the government's pristine public image of Singapore. According to Singapore's National Environment Agency, cleanliness of public areas are achieved in three key ways: the cleaning of public areas, public education and enforcement. This leads to the question of: is Singapore clean or cleaned?
